About the database

Mentorship offers a plethora of benefits to mentors and mentees, yet it can be challenging for people to find mentors that align with their needs and professional backgrounds. It can be intimidating for people entering the environmental sector to navigate a new field and find a mentor. Environmental professionals who currently work in the field also struggle to find a mentor, as our 2024 Transparency Report found only 30% of organizations offer formal mentorship programs.

The Green 2.0 Mentorship Database fills these gaps by providing a way for people to find others willing to connect and by providing resources to guide them in how to foster mentoring relationships.

Mentors and mentees can use the database in a variety of ways, and mentors are free to act both as a mentor and a mentee. The database can be used to:

  • Find a mentor.
  • Support your job seeking efforts through informational interviews and long-term mentoring relationships.
  • Connect with peers to learn from each other.
  • Seek advice through coaching.
  • Network with mentors and/or mentees.
  • And much more!

To read more, please see our Mentorship Database Overview.

How to Join the Database

Interested in joining the database as a mentor or mentee? Follow the steps below to learn how to register.

To join the database as a mentor or mentee, you must be 18+. You may be internationally based, but please consider when joining that this database is primarily US-focused and the majority of mentors and mentees will be living in the US.

Joining the database as a mentor is open to anyone (18+) with professional experience in the environmental sector at all levels in their career from entry-level to executive level. You do not have to currently be employed, but should have some experience in the environmental sector that allows you to offer information, advice, and/or guidance to a mentee. If this applies to you, you are welcome to submit a request to join and have a mentor profile created.

Step 1: Before joining, we recommend you review the following materials:

  • Mentor Expectations: This will provide detailed information about being a mentor and important context for filling out the Mentor Request to Join form.
  • Requirements and Guiding Principles: This page outlines Guiding Principles for mentors and mentees as well as specific requirements for joining the database.

Step 2: Fill out the Mentor Request to Join Form

Please note at any time you can exit and come back to the form if needed, as long as you use the same browser.

Step 3: We will review your submission and email you within 3 weeks of submitting the form. We will let you know if we have any clarifying questions or edits to your profile.

Step 4: As long as you meet the requirements and we have no questions or edits, we will add your profile to the database, send you a link to your profile, and create an account for you to login and access the database.

Step 5: Now that your profile is created, mentees will be able to find your profile and reach out with requests to meet. As a mentor, you can also use the database to connect with peers or to find a mentor yourself. We will also send you tips and guidance on how to connect with and support mentees.

Anyone (18+) interested in connecting with professionals in the environmental sector to support their career goals and/or professional development are welcome to join. As a mentee, you can be:

  • A student interested in learning about the environmental sector.
  • Unemployed but looking for a job in the environmental sector.
  • Currently working in a different sector but interested in switching to the environmental sector.
  • Currently working in the environmental sector.

As long as you have an interest in working in the environmental sector, we encourage you to submit a request to join.
