about the event:
Ocean resources and policy influence have long been inequitable due to racism, colonialism, and industrialization. Meanwhile, coastal communities have faced disproportionate impacts from climate change, pollution, overfishing, habitat loss, coastal gentrification, and oil and gas activities.
This event prioritized the experiences and voices of communities that have been historically excluded from ocean conservation discussions. It featured expert panels, high-level guest speakers, and more.
Upwell 2026 was hosted by Aquarium Conservation Partnership, Azul, Green 2.0, and Urban Ocean Lab. The planning committee included Center for American Progress, Earthjustice, Natural Resources Defense Council, and Ocean Defense Initiative. We strived to host an inclusive, accessible event that enabled all individuals to engage fully.
