Reflecting on the challenges 2025 presented, finding motivation to sustain equity work and lead on inclusive practices is even more essential than ever. In part one of this two-part series, we asked environmental leaders for their 2026 new year wish to offer a source of inspiration and the reminder to center rest and joy in our work.
What is your New Yearโs Wish for the environmental movement in 2026?
Karina Ramirez, Vice President of People & Culture, Citizensโ Climate Lobby

Advocating for Excluded Voices
โMy wish for 2026 is to continue to remind all our communities of the intersectionality of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We need to continue to be advocates for the voices that are not part of our everyday conversations and in discussions of proposed environmental solutions.โ
Carmera Thomas-Wilhite, Vice President for Communities and Partnerships, Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Inclusive Collaboration to Create Solutions
โMy New Yearโs wish for the environmental movement in 2026 is that the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the broader movement continue to strengthen and nurture meaningful relationships across the Bay watershed. These connections should build deeper connections across all sectors and communities, and foster collaboration that is inclusive. I hope we amplify stories that inspire action and elevate voices from communities most impacted by environmental challenges. By centering equity and listening deeply, we can create solutions that reflect diverse needs and drive lasting change. Ultimately, my wish is to protect and restore the Bay and our planet so that future generations have a healthy, thriving environment.โ
Lesley Webb, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Specialist, American Forest Foundation

Recollecting Rest and Centering Joy
โMy New Year’s wish for the environmental movement in 2026 is for us to recollect rest and peace within ourselves. We work tirelessly to fight for an equitable and healthy planet for all. This year, I hope we as a collective will remember to bring that dynamic energy back to ourselves. Let us not forget to celebrate our wins, live in our accomplishments, be curious and learn from diverse perspectives, and exchange our knowledge. Take joy basking in your love for nature, or build community to strengthen personal connections that bring new ideas for living more sustainably. Incorporating rest can be a part of your pillar for growth and energy for creating an inclusive environment, where people and the planet can peacefully thrive.โ
