Amidst attacks on our environment and diversity, equity, and inclusion, finding inspiration to drive progress is more essential than ever. In part two of this two-part series, we asked environmental leaders what motivates them in 2026 to offer a source of inspiration and the reminder to have courage as we move forward together.
Matt Scott, Director, Storytelling & Engagement, Project Drawdown

What brings you joy in our work at the start of 2026?
โWhat brings me joy when I think about our work in 2026 is the people who continue to show up and stay committed to making a positive impact, even after several years of real challenges. Recent years have not been easy for this work, and that reality is impossible to ignore. And yet, what brings me joy is zooming in and seeing just how many individuals and organizations remain deeply committed to creating the change our communities need. I feel especially energized by the opportunity to invest more time and care into grassroots communities and everyday people, helping them see the power of their role and the power of their story. Ultimately, what brings me joy looking ahead to 2026 is knowing that so many people are relentless in pursuing the world we need and are willing to step into the role of the heroes we have all been waiting for.โ

Whatโs one thing you want to remember when things get tough in 2026?
โProgress is never as linear as people who have compassion and empathy would like it to be in our nation. For our communities, policies and practices that do harm (intentional or unintentional) arenโt new, but with resilience weโve figured out how to live with love and a strategy for justice. When things get tough this year, I want to remember that the people and movements that came before us give us both hope and the tools to navigate what comes next. I also want the environmental movement to remember that movements are built by people together and not by one person alone, which can help us lean into our community during difficult times.โ

What motivates you in 2026 to continue our work?
โTo be honest, 2025 tested my motivation for this work. I realized I needed to reconnect with nature to rediscover my sense of purpose. Just a few days into 2026, Iโm already deeply inspired by those who remain unwavering in their pursuit of a more just and sustainable world, those who are fearless in the face of insurmountable odds and lead courageous by example. We may never see the full fruits of our efforts, but this work has always been about generations to come. And that gives me hope.โ
